Making Lefse at Grandma’s

Posted by Erica Lea on December 22nd, 2009 . Filed under: Family . (edit)

Every year, Grandma makes a large batch of lefse for Christmas. This year, she asked us to help her!
First, Grandma rolled out the dough on her well-floured counter.
12-22-09n5
Then, she transported it to the table, where John waited to cook the dough.
12-22-09n4
Next John, the expert lefse cooker, carefully placed the dough onto the hot griddle. I eventually convinced him to let me try my hand at cooking the lefse.

The finished product.

Meanwhile, Janna, Amanda, and I set up and decorated the tree.
12-22-09n6
We discovered some adorable retro ornaments.
Now we must wait ’til Christmas Eve to eat the delicious lefse, visit with relatives, and open presents. Only two days left to go. I love this time of year!

What special memories you’re making. How wonderful to be able to have time like that to spend with your Grandma. And your documentation [aka photography] is splendid. =)

Thank you all for your very kind words.
Samantha: Lefse is a soft Norwegian flatbread made from potatoes, cream, butter, and flour. We like to eat ours spread with butter and sprinkled with sugar. You can read more about it here.
  5. Samantha
Huh. It sounds really good! We’ll have to try it sometime. It might be something my dad would eat. I wonder if he’s ever heard of it. He is part Norwegian. LOL

I love Lefse. I had two female relatives have a blast trying to make it last year. I wish I could have been there. I have relatives in Bemidji, Minnesota. My Dad’s family comes from Norway. I love your blog and found it through Tasty Kitchen.

You should post the recipe! We make lefse every year in our family too–but ours don’t usually get that large. Would love to try your Grandmother’s recipe.

Sweet Dreams

This week’s photo challenge from  Faces is “Sweet Dreams”.

I couldn’t remember any nice sleeping photos (I generally take them as a joke), but I knew that Judah would be the perfect subject. He seems to sleep through most of the day.

Indian Summer

.
For the past week or so we have been enjoying an Indian Summer. It really was a nice break from the cold and gloom we experienced in October.
.

One fine afternoon, Mom insisted that we all take a walk. We ambled down to the beach and found many birds on the lake.

Elinor loved playing in the sand; she tried to stuff some of it into her mouth.

Now I’m just waiting for the snow to fall so that we can begin winter sports: ice skating, x-country & downhill skiing, sledding, etc.

Fingerless Mitts for Janna

11-11-09n3
When I found three skeins of pink fingering-weight yarn at a thrift store, I just couldn’t help myself. That yarn NEEDED to be bought. However, baby pink is not really my color.
11-11-09n1
So, as my sister Janna (who loves pink) read two novels aloud to us, I knit her these lacy fingerless gloves.
This pattern is available for free through Ravelry.
11-11-09n2
With the leftover yarn I am knitting this lovely hat for Janna, which is also available for free through Ravelry.
P.S. If you like to knit or crochet, I highly recommend joining Ravelry.

Vibrant Sunrise

10-28-09n1
On Tuesday, the sun rose a vibrant orange-pink.
This was a “Hey, photographer!” moment:
“Hey Erica, you have to take a picture of this!” my brother John informed me as I was reading Monday’s paper. I managed to snap off a few shots while the colors were still vivid.

Fix-It-Friday #31 ~ October 9th

october-9th-grouping
Have you ever heard of I Heart Faces? It is a blog devoted to the beauty of capturing faces and helping readers to improve their photography. Every week they have a photo contest and every Friday they host a fun event call Fix-It-Friday. Every week a new photo is uploaded for anyone who wishes to edit and share. This week, I decided to play along!
For my editing, I used Corel Paint Shop Pro XI.
Click the photo to view the full-sized image.
For edit #1 (center): First, I used the blemish fixer to erase some dirty spots around this young man’s nose, mouth, and cheeks. Then I boosted the contrast and changed the color balance to a warmer tone. Next, I brightened the whites and highlights of the eyes and desaturated the whites and his teeth. Finally, I sharpened the image using unsharp mask and vignetted the edges.
For edit #2 (far right): Using the image from edit #1, I undid the sharpening and vignetting actions and turned the photo black & white. I then duplicated the layer, filled it with a deep brown, set the blend mode to color, and turned down the opacity of the new layer.
I really enjoyed this challenge and can’t wait to “play” again!

Great edits! Love the second…. not overdone at all. You did a really nice job!
  2. Regina Normandy
Nice! when you put the pictures on your blog, is that three sep. pictures, of did you put them all in one? If you did put them all as one jpeg, how did you do that? they’re all great! Love the last one.
  3. Erica Lea
Regina: They are all one picture.
To do this, using Paint Shop Pro, I created a new, blank project slightly larger than my final photo (e.g. my photos were about 400×600 pixels, so the new project was about 1235 x 615 pixels). Next, I copied the images onto this project as new layers and moved them around until I liked how they were positioned. I then filled the original layer with black, merged all, and saved.
I have only recently started merging pictures like this, so I have a lot to learn!

Thrifted Knitting Needles

Look what Mom picked up at a rummage sale for only $3! Included are straight, circular, and double pointed needles, plus three stitch holders, all contained in a flour tin. What a find!

Misty Morning

Thursday morning dawned cold and misty. There were countless webs crisscrossing and dangling from the plants in our yard. I grabbed the camera and spent the better part of an hour capturing the delicate webs and drops of moisture.

Classic Movie Review: For Me and My Gal

m
Movie Quality: 2/5
Moral Rating: 4/5
Trailer: Link
Release Date: 1942
Summary: On the brink of Word War I, Harry Palmer and Jo Hayden, two talented young vaudeville performers, dream of performing at the Palace Theatre, New York. Just as their dream is set to come true, Harry is drafted.
To delay his enrollment in the army, he smashes his hand in a trunk. When Jo, who has just learned of her soldier brother’s death, realizes what Harry has done, she breaks off their engagement and expresses a desire never to see him again.
Stricken with guilt, Harry attempts to enroll in the army, but is denied because his hand is permanently maimed. Depressed and rejected by his friends, he finally decides to help out the best he can – by providing entertainment for the troops.
To learn whether or not he gets his girl, you’ll just have watch the movie (or read a more revealing summary). ;)
Objectionable Content:
Sensuality: Couples kiss several times. Harry and Jo embrace while sitting on the floor.
The ladies’ costumes are not always modest. One costume was deemed too low, so all close-up shots were blurred around the bodice. Jo dances in a skimpy costume.
Language: A few mild exclamations such as “golly” and “darn”.
Violence: The scene where Harry Smashes his hand could be quite frightening to young children. There are a few scenes of war (shooting and wounded men).
Drugs/Alcohol: There are several instances where characters drink.
My Review: My sisters and I really enjoyed this movie. Several of the costumes are lovely and the love story is very cute.
That said, I would not consider this one of my favorite movies, nor would I need to see it multiple times. I would definitely label it as a chic flick, especially since it is a musical. Dad hates musicals. The preachy propaganda for World War II breaks through a little too much for my tastes. And the only number that I really enjoyed was the title song: “For Me and My Gal.”
But, if you would like to see a charming little love story, I think you would enjoy “For Me and My Gal.” Here is my favorite song from the film:
